We operate within some of Cape Town's most marginalised informal settlements. We started our journey in 2016, and we've come a long way since then.
It is the foundation of opportunity, safety, and dignity. Our mission is to create spaces that inspire learning, growth, and belonging, by laying better foundations through a sustainable model of early childhood development infrastructure.
Designing and constructing safe, child-friendly learning environments in impoverished areas.
Partnering with local residents, schools, and leaders to ensure ownership and long-term sustainability.
Creating opportunities for skills training, mentorship, and involvement in community builds.
"We do not tell communities what they need, we ask. From that dialogue, true transformation begins."
Bluemoon Projects implements a sustainable ECD model by transforming inadequate structures into robust centres equipped with essential facilities like kitchens, playgrounds, and gardens. These centres are designed to be fireproof, well-ventilated, and flood-resistant, addressing the environmental challenges of informal settlements. By supporting formalisation processes, we ensure ongoing government funding eligibility, fostering long-term educational and developmental benefits for children while strengthening community resilience.
Every centre we build sits inside a wider circle of support, from skills and jobs to food relief and volunteering.
We renovate buildings as needed and back local initiatives, soup kitchens, teacher support, and skills workshops such as sewing. Each effort is aimed at improving community infrastructure and fostering sustainable development in the areas where we operate.
We tackle food insecurity by collecting and distributing surplus food to vulnerable community members, and our centres' kitchens support nutrition programmes. When fires and flooding strike, we mobilise skilled volunteers to repair and rebuild homes, schools, and vital infrastructure, restoring resilience and hope.
On every project we employ local unemployed community members and train them in real construction roles, safety protocols, construction techniques, equipment operation, and project management, at all skill levels. It's work that empowers people to build careers and lift their own communities.
Volunteers help build and renovate ECD centres, support teachers, and organise community events. Our "Do It Days" offer hands-on experiences, from painting classrooms to planting gardens, that build lasting connection and real impact.
Volunteer with usSince our first project in 2016, Bluemoon Projects has grown brick by brick, partnership by partnership, transforming lives across the Western Cape and beyond. Total value delivered since inception: R14.9 million.
Total value of projects delivered since inception: R14.9 million.
Bluemoon Projects is deeply rooted in the communities we serve, primarily focusing on Groendal in Franschhoek. Our journey began in Vrygrond township, also known as "Capricorn", and has expanded to include Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, and other underserved areas. These communities often confront challenges like gang control, which hinders their access to government support and civil resources. Nevertheless, as trusted community members, we continue to deliver vital construction services that benefit the entire community.
For more than three decades, Hillary Faulmann walked alongside South Africa's informal communities, listening, learning, and witnessing the daily challenges they faced. As a community activist and advocate for change, she saw what too many had learned to overlook: the heart-breaking state of Early Childhood Development infrastructure, and the growing number of children left without a foundation in learning.
These were not just statistics. They were faces, names, and futures hanging in the balance. She realised that waiting for change was not enough, she needed to be the change she wanted to see.
And so, in 2016, Bluemoon Projects was registered as an NPO and PBO, built on a vision to transform despair into dignity and to give every child the right to learn, play, and dream in a safe, nurturing environment.
Building Hope. Restoring Dignity. Transforming Communities.

“The desire for change begins with us. It's up to us to raise our hands to make the change, create the difference, but most importantly BE the change you would like to see.”
